Hot stone massage is a therapeutic technique that involves the use of heated stones to provide relaxation and alleviate muscle tension. When heat is applied to muscles, it increases muscle spindle activity, promoting greater flexibility and range of motion. Heat also increases the extensibility of collagen, creating elasticity, relaxing the muscles, reducing stiffness and muscle spasms. All of these effects allow for deeper and easier penetration into a muscle during a massage. In addition, heat reduces the viscosity of synovial fluid, creating more freedom and less pain in joints.
